Patcowasfoundedinthefallof1992,forthepurposeofprovidingtheelectronicsindustrywithstateoftheartbatterymanagementtoolsspanningthechemistriesemployedinsecondarybatteries.ThefirstproductwasabatterymanagerforleadacidbatteriesdesignedaroundtheUnitrode3906leadacidcontroller.FromtherePatcohasexpandedtheleadacidlinetoincludehighercurrentmanagersforlargerbatteries,andalgorithmsforuniqueconstructionofleadacidbatteries.NiCADandNiMHmanagersdesignedaroundspecializedcontrollerscamenext.AthirdproductlineaddressesthemediumprismaticLithiumIonbatteriesmanufacturedbySaftAmerica.Patcohasdevelopedanewtechnologyforbatterymanagementequipment.Heatistheenemyofelectronics,interferingwithboththelifeexpectancyofelectricalelementsemployedinthebatterymanageritself,andthesensingoftemperatureinthebatterybeingmanaged.Throughaproprietarymethodofcontrol,Patco'sengineeringgrouphasdevelopedatechniqueoffeedingbackcontrolinformationfromthebatterymanagementchiptocontrolaprimaryswitchingcircuitproducingthelowvoltagepowerforthebattery.Thisapproacheliminatesmuchoftheheatthatwouldhavetobedealtwithbyconventionalapproaches.Asofthefallof1996,PatcoElectronicsoccupiesitsown10,000squarefootfacility,situatedonfiveacresinSpaceportCenterIndustrialPark,justoutsideKennedySpaceCenter.
